Classify a returned asset

Classify a returned asset

Inspect a returned asset, decide what happens to it next, and record that it reached the right area. The decision, the move and the follow-up are recorded as separate steps, so you can see which returns are still waiting on one of them.

Before you start

  • You need to be Asset and Logistics Associate, IT Warehouse Technical Team, Dedicated IT Warehouse Administrator or CDI Staff, IT Hardware Inventory Supervisor, or IT Business Systems or Application Team.
  • The asset must already have the status Returned. It gets there through a completed return, or when a custodian hands it in.
  • An asset can have only one open classification at a time.

Steps

Open the Returns tab

In the sidebar, under Warehouse Operations, select Preparation and Returns, then open the Returns tab. Returned assets waiting for a decision are listed under Awaiting inspection, each showing Tag, Serial, Condition and Where it is.

Inspect and classify the asset

On the asset's card, select Inspect and classify. Choose a Classification. Each choice names the area the asset must be held in:

  • Reusable, held in Good stock
  • Testing required, held in Testing
  • Repair, Warranty or Defective, held in Defective
  • For retirement, held in Quarantine
  • Disposal, held in Disposal

Say why

Write your reason in Why. It is required. Add Inspection notes if you have them, then select OK. The asset moves to Classified, not finished, showing Decision by and Must be held in. The asset's status changes now, but its location does not.

Record where it went

After you have physically moved the asset, select Record where it went. In Where was it put?, choose the Slot it was placed in and select OK. Segregated changes from Not yet moved to Yes.

Link the follow-up

Some decisions need another record to carry the asset onward. Select Link the follow-up and enter one Ticket id, Transaction id or Preparation id, then select OK. Testing required needs a preparation, Repair and Warranty need a ticket, and For retirement and Disposal need a transaction. For Reusable and Defective the button stays unavailable, because nothing further is required.

Close the classification

When the asset is segregated and any follow-up is linked, select Close. The classification closes straight away, with no confirmation dialog.

⚠️

The slot is checked against the area your decision needs. If you choose a slot in the wrong kind of area, 7-Asset refuses it and names both the required area and the one you chose.

Tip: This screen does not create the follow-up record. Raise the repair or warranty ticket on Tickets, prepare the retirement on Asset Transactions, or open a preparation on the Preparation bench first, then link its id here. If Close is unavailable, hover over it to see what is still missing.
